Introduction – vegan meatloaf recipe

Craving meatloaf, but want to maintain that vegan diet? Me too!

This weekend I was struck with the craving for a bourbon whiskey BBQ sauce, and something meaty (but still vegan!) to go along with it. I don’t have any recipes for Whiskey BBQ sauces in my repertoire, so I visited my good old friend Google and found this recipe by Krissie over at Self Proclaimed Foodie.

This BBQ sauce is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it. I made one batch, and it made 4 cups – more than enough for this recipe and another I’m gonna post later this week. If you don’t want to use this recipe, however, any Whiskey BBQ sauce recipe should do. BBQ Sauce found, I needed something meaty.

So I processed my Black Pepper Seitan loaf in a food processor until it maintained its form when squeezed in my hand and used it as my base. In place of egg, I used flaxseed meal and warm water, and went with a ketchup/bbq sauce mix for the flavouring in the meatloaf.

This recipe goes best with vegetables such as corn or potatoes.

  • Food Processor

  • 1 Lb Black Pepper Seitan
  • 1 Tbsp Flaxseed Meal
  • 2.5 Tbsp Warm Water
  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup No Added Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Whiskey BBQ Sauce
  • 0.5 Cup Seasoned Garlic Bread Crumbs
  • 1 Tsp Parsley Flakes

  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup No Added Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Bourbon Whiskey BBQ Sauce

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Add together the flaxseed meal and the warm water and mix very well, then set aside for 5 minutes.
  • Cut your 1 Lb of seitan into manageable chunks, and stick them in the food processor. Pulse until well processed and it maintains form when squeezed in your hands.
  • In a large bowl combine the processed seitan, ketchup, whiskey bbq sauce, bread crumbs, and parsley flakes.
  • By now, the flaxseed meal and warm water should have taken on a gelatinous consistency. Add to the seitan mixture.
  • Mix by hands well. The end result should hold its form when squished in your hands.
  • Take this mixture and put it in your baking pan. Pack evenly.
  • Take the 2 Tbsp ketchup and 2 Tbsp Whiskey BBQ Sauce and mix them together, then spread evenly across the top of your wheatloaf.
  • Cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and allow 15 minutes to cool. Serve hot, refrigerate leftovers
